VISITORS led into Hightown from the Formby
Bypass are attempting a dangerous drive across the beach to get to the
Gormley statues, it has been alleged.
The incidents have led to
calls for improved signage to stop drivers arriving in Hightown in the
first place.
Liberal Democrat Manor Ward Councillor John Gibson called for an
Iron Men tourism sign to be installed near The Pheasant Pub in Moss Lane,
near the bypass, directing day-trippers to Crosby.
As a result, Crosby Area Committee has asked for a report from
Sefton Council to find out if it is feasible.
Cllr Gibson said: “We are getting people coming into Hightown but
unfortunately they are trying to drive all the away across the beach to
see the Gormley statues.
“Some of them will park and get very frustrated and turn around.”
At a Crosby Area Committee meeting however, Sefton Council officer,
Mr Johnson, said introducing one brown and white tourism sign would
confuse drivers.
He said the council would have to then install additional follow-up
signs leading all the way to the statues.
Mr Johnson said: “If we provide a sign we need another three signs
leading through Crosby.
“To have one sign on its own, we would end up with an awful lot of
complaints by drivers who find the first sign and then nothing.”
After the meeting, Cllr Gibson said: “The Iron Men on Crosby Beach
are proving to be extremely popular with tourists – so popular that some
motorists are driving into Hightown looking for them.
