Mae Jemison
Mae Carol Jemison
(born October 17, 1956) is an African American physician and NASA
astronaut. She became the first woman of recent African ancestry to travel
in space when she went into orbit aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour on
September 12, 1992.
Bachelor of science in chemical engineering from
Stanford University, 1977; M.D. from Cornell University, 1981;
two honorary doctorates; hobbies: Travelling, graphic arts, photography,
sewing, skiing, collecting African Art, languages (Russian, Swahili,
Japanese), weight training, reading, dancing, exercising; Area Peace
Corps Medical Officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia; she left NASA
to serve again in the medical branch.
