Metropolitan cathedral of Christ the king / Chorome

Metropolitan cathedral of Christ the king / Chorome

* This is the City of Liverpool's Roman Catholic cathedral.

* Originally there were plans for a massive domed cathedral designed by Sir Edwin Luytens which would be larger than St Peters in Rome. Construction of the crypt started but was stopped following the outbreak of World War 2.

* After the end of the war faced with rationing and crippling costs it was decided to scale down the design and a new architect, Sir Frederick Gibberd was brought in. His design was consecretated in 1967.

* The shape of the cathedral is circular and spiked to represent the crown of thorns Jesus wore on his head.

* The exterior material is concrete which has not lasted well, it regularly leaks and has provided worse reliability than 600 year old traditional cathedrals.
